MARKET INFO >> FRENCH PEOPLE AND CHEESE >> The organic farming

The organic farming is a form of agriculture defined by the IFOAM as:

"...a production system that sustains the health of soils, ecosystems and people. It relies on ecological processes, biodiversity cycles adapted to local conditions, rather than the use of inputs with adverse effects. Organic agriculture combines tradition, innovation and science to benefit the shared environment and promote fair relationships and a good quality of life for all involved..."

The French legislation rules the use of “agriculture biologique” (biological agriculture), “agriculture organique” (organic agriculture) and “agriculture biodynamique” (biodynamic agriculture) terms. In 1991, European Union confirms the French choice, creating legislation about organic farming. At the beginning that legislation ruled only vegetal products.

Organic farming In France

The organic farming’s movement was born in the 60’s, to face the expansion of the productivist model.

Since the 80’s, the movement in no more a fringe concept, but a real alternative, officially recognized by the French administration.

Today, regional and national organizations work to develop organic agriculture, cooperating with farmers in an efficient and professional network. But in 2009, only 2% of French food productions were organic, and we have to import some to satisfy consumer’s wishes.
