MARKET INFO >> CHEESE ECONOMY >> The exportations of French cheeses

French cheese is a production very appreciated by strangers, which has a well established reputation. Experts of marketing understood it long time ago and usually put the term “French” on the packaging of a large variety of productions. What’s more, a lot of our traditional recipes were copied to produce cheeses out of France!

Which are the most important cheese-importing countries?

-  They are European countries. Here is the top 5:

1st - Germany with 130 126 T in 2010

-  Out of Europe, the United States of America is the first, with 18 071 T in 2010

USA imports few from France, compared to European countries. One of the reasons is that raw milk cheese can’t enter in the territory of United States if it isn’t aged of 60 days at least. So, lots of cheeses as the Camembert AOP (21 days of maturation) never enter.

Which were the most exported kinds of cheese in 2010?

-  Fresh cheeses: 217 995 T

-  Soft pate cheeses: 173 939 T
